Every day we read the paper, pick up the phone, write and send emails and text messages, surf online, listen to the radio and watch TV. In order to be able to use all these services, there has to be a stable and powerful communications infrastructure in place. OFCOM helps to ensure that the population and businesses in all parts of the country have access to adequate and competitive tele-communications services. OFCOM makes it possible for radio and television users at local level to access regional stations and the SRG’s programmes at national level. It also distributes the revenues from television and radio licence fees fairly among all regions in Switzerland. In the postal sector, OFCOM makes sure that newspapers and magazines benefit from reduced postage rates. It also manages and allocates frequencies for radio stations, mobile and wireless devices to ensure interference-free communication. OFCOM’s oversight responsibilities include consumer protection. Alarm Centers 147

An emergency call is a call with a three digit short number of the emergency service selected by the caller: European emergency service 112; police, emergency call 117; fire, alarm center 118; Friendly Hand 143; ambulance, emergency call 144; telephone help for children and young 147. An emergen-cy call can be done from a fixed, mobile or satellite network. The emergency call must be routed to the alarm center of the competent service according to the location and nature of the case. A region from which the emergency calls are routed to a precise alarm center is an intervention region. The map shows the location of 147 alarm centers in Switzerland for emergency calls 147 originated from a fixed, mobile and satellite network. The 147 alarm centers and corresponding routing numbers of any intervention region are identified when selecting the targeted intervention region. The 147 fixed, mobile and satellite alarm centers of the intervention region can be the same alarm center or different alarm centers.
